Today, April 12th is National Grilled Cheese Sandwich Day!
Typically, you don’t hear the words Vegan and grilled cheese mentioned in the same sentence. Everyone automatically assumes that Vegans miss out on dunking a gooey, savory grilled cheese sandwich into a hot bowl of tomato soup. Not this Vegan. I’ve found a comparable solution to my childhood comfort food that also happens to be a great addition to WVL’s Stuff I Love.
Daiya, my new favorite cheese substitute is a great addition to my Vegan diet because as a former cheese lover (and I mean L-O-V-E-R), I found that giving up the gooey stuff has been one of the hardest challenges. Coming from a girl with the flavor of cheese in her DNA, I’m impressed with how satiated I feel after creating and devouring a Daiya grilled cheese sandwich. Even some restaurants are adding Daiya products to their menu in order to accommodate the lactose intolerant, Vegans, food allergy sufferers, and dairy-free health enthusiasts.
The Skinny…
Daiya, the dairy-free‘cheese’ that melts and stretches like real cheese, is a Canadian-based company that opened its doors in 2008. Daiya has worked tirelessly to create a product line of shreds, slices, blocks, cream cheese, mac n’ cheese, Greek yogurt, salad dressings, pizzas, and even cheesecake! They have over 30 dairy-free products in total.
What I Like:
Priding themselves on being the ‘industry leader in plant-based foods, the 100% plant-based company produces faux-cheese products that are not only lactose-free, they’re also:
- dairy-free
- gluten-free
- casein-free
- soy-free
- cholesterol-free
What I L–o–v–e:
Simply – it’s the taste and texture. I don’t feel like I’m missing out. Made from tapioca starch, palm fruit, pea protein and non-GMO oils, it’s perfect on pizza, sandwiches, nachos, crackers, bread, and pasta.
My favorite way to enjoy it however, is nestled between 2 slices of bread, stuffed with sliced tomatoes, fresh basil, and a sidekick of tomato soup for dipping.
Thanks to Daiya (found in most major grocery stores), now the cheese lovin’ lactose intolerant, food allergy sufferers, dairy-free health enthusiasts, and Vegans can rejoice!
